The Occasional Affair is a 192-page book featuring 13 seasonal parties, with complete details and custom four-color photography throughout the book. Each chapter begins with a party overview listing “The Theme, Setting, Mood, Colors, Taste, Sounds, and Experience.” The accompanying text describes in detail how to accomplish the look and setting shown for each gathering, with tips and alternate ideas so readers can express their own personality and style. Complete instructions for creating invitations are included, as well as additional options for simplifying or customizing the piece.
Each chapter features ‘An Essential Element of Entertaining’ – a short sidebar featuring tips and suggestions for almost any entertaining dilemma. Topics range from tips on toasting to handling a family confrontation. The ‘Settings’ sidebar explains how to plan and stage each party, with helpful resources on where to purchase the items featured. The text accompanying each party includes a commentary on the history or background of each holiday or event. ‘The Experience’ is a suggested activity or event that makes every party unique, with alternate ideas for readers who want to simplify. A full menu for two to 12 people includes detailed recipes along with a list of essential dinnerware and equipment plus a handy shopping list. The ‘Party Timeline’ spells out an organized plan for navigating and planning the party’s tasks, from one month to one hour prior to the event. The chapters conclude with creative ideas for take-away gifts and party favors.
Additional features include seating diagrams (including several different table shapes and sizes), grocery lists (customized for party foods and accompaniments), bar lists (with recommended quantities), a comprehensive budget and a contact list for guests and vendors.
I wanted to write a book to inspire people to look differently at the events and holidays that forever carve out our lives and memories,” author Maury Ankrum says. “I believe in miracles, I believe in second chances, and I believe that we each control our destiny and create our individual journey. I am a two-time survivor of cancer, and the mother of three incredible little girls given to me each with unique and complicated health issues. Through these experiences, I have a profound appreciation of how precious my time is with my loved ones and friends.”
